New Science Fiction Series Invasion Coming to Apple TV+

(See my other trailer-related posts) – A new series is scheduled to begin on Apple TV+ 22 October 2021. The name of the series is Invasion and it is a science fiction story about Earth being invaded. The story is told through the experiences of different people all around the world. The official synopsis per Apple TV+ is: Earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity’s existence. Events unfold in real time through the eyes of five ordinary people across the globe as they struggle to make sense of the chaos unraveling around them.

The trailer looks intriguing. I have been a science fiction fan since I was in Middle School. I look forward to watching the series when it begins in October. This first season includes 10 episodes.

Product Review – Sony Crackle TV

Product Review – Web Tools – I categorized this as a ‘web tool’ as it has a web component, but it is really more than simply that. I have known about Crackle TV for a while, but I was reminded of it at the July CapMac meeting where it was mentioned in the presentation on “Streaming TV” services. Many people are ‘cutting the cord’ and doing away with cable services and choosing a streaming option. Crackle TV is one of those options.

This service originally went under the name of Grouper until it was changed to Crackle in January of 2018. Crackle is a free streaming service that has been around since 2006. At the time of this article, it is available in 21 countries and is available on Roku, Android, Xbox, Apple TV, PS3, and iPhone. You do have to sign up for a free account.

Content includes both TV programs and movies. When I checked as I was writing this article there were over 70 TV series and more than 90 movies available. Available programs are organized into 8 channels – Spotlight Channel, Sony Crackle Originals Channel, Fandom Channel, Action Channel, Comedy Channel, Drama Channel, Thriller Channel, and the Icon Channel. Some content is older, like “Walker, Texas Ranger” on the ‘Icon Channel’, while other like ‘The Oath’ on the Drama Channel is original programming. The programming available through Crackle TV is included in the listings within the Apple TV App in the US.

I do recommend this service/App – I have the App installed on my iPad and Apple TV. Since it is free, I think it is a good option to add.

Product Review – Pluto TV

I have known about Pluto TV for a while, but I was reminded of it at the July CapMac meeting where it was mentioned in the presentation on “Streaming TV” services. Many people are ‘cutting the cord’ and doing away with cable services and choosing a streaming option. Pluto TV is one of those options.

Pluto is a free streaming service that has been around since 2013. At the time of this article, it has more than 75 content partners, with over 100 free channels to choose from. Estimates are that more than 6 million use it every month. Pluto TV generates revenue through advertisements displayed to viewers.

A few of the current channels are shown in the image above. Channels are grouped into categories such as News, Sports, Movies, Entertainment, Comedy, Chill Out, Life + Style, and Geek + Gaming. There are also several internet radio stations offered. Some, mostly movie, on-demand content is available in addition to the scheduled programs. You can check out what is currently playing here.  The programming available through Pluto TV is included in the listings within the Apple TV App in the US.

You can view programs from Pluto TV through your web browser, or by downloading the Pluto TV App to your Apple TV or iOS device. Pluto TV can also be viewed via several other devices: Roku, Visio, Samsung, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Playstation, and Chromecast.

I do recommend this service/App – I have the App installed on my iPad and Apple TV. Since it is free, I think it is a good option to add.

14. iOS/Games – Spree Pop is a straightforward mobile game that I really liked. It’s a stripped down, arcade shooter that supports iPhone X and iOS 11. The game features clean, colorful visuals and fun game mechanics. Besides, Spree Pop fun time is dominated by the sprightly soundtrack which makes the game so addictive that once you pop, it’s irresistible. It’s remarkably easy to pick up and play for this game but putting it down is the exact opposite. Its entire set up may be too simplistic for avid mobile gamers, and its bare-bones might not be the best for some player too. But personally, this is my type of game, the only aspect that didn’t go well with my taste is the distracting ads. However, this should not be a major worry; you can remove the ads with a onetime IAP which is pocket-friendly. Download for free from the App Store

macOS New App Release –

Product Announcement – Lakehorn AG of Bern, Switzerland has released a full suite of Network Speed Tester apps for all Apple devices. Network Speed Tester lets users measure and visualize network and WiFi performance between any Apple device on the same network.

Advertised and actual networks speed can vary quite a lot – this is why we’ve created the Network Speed Tester suite of apps, to dig deeper, and find weak spots or bottleneck in any network. In larger houses, WiFi-repeaters are used to improve the range of the WiFi signal, but sometimes the actual performance gets worse because of bad placement or configurations. This can all be detected by Network Speed Tester.

We use client-server technology to measure speed, i.e. various amounts of random data is sent between devices, to get accurate real-world results. The results are then displayed in a graph in realtime, so that any change is visible immediately. E.g. The user can walk around to house and find the best spots for video streaming. Or he moves or even just tilts the WiFi router to see changes in speed.

Network Speed Tester requires any two devices to operate. One device will act as the server using the server app (on iOS or tvOS) or the combined app on macOS. From the second device, the client app will connect to the server via bonjour and visualize the results.

Have you heard of “Comet TV”

Comet TV is a new network featuring Science Fiction and Horror. Some shows are good, some are “classic” and are more ‘campy’ than good. Some are so bad that you just can’t stop watching them, but then they are free.

Some cable/satellite networks include Comet TV. The easiest way though for you to watch the channel is either through the App for the 4th generation Apple TV or through the website. The website provides a live stream version of their content. You can check the on-line schedule to see what is playing.

Some of the current movies are “Dead Like Me”, “Night of the Comet, “Android”, “Bubba Ho-Tep”, “Eliminators”,”The Incredible Melting Man” and “The Crow”. Not exactly Academy Award winners, but . . . . interesting selections.

TV series currently on Comet TV include: “Poltergeist: The Legacy” and “Stargate: SG-1 (Starts April 3)”.

This is NOT going to replace the main stream channels you are watching, but it might provide some humorous and nostalgic diversion on occasion.
