Where to Download Software for the Mac

(See my other Mac-related posts) – Have you heard or read of a Mac App that you now want to download and try? That is easy and very safe if you find the App on the Mac App Store. But what if it isn’t carried in the App Store?

I came across the article “The 7 Best Sites to Securely Download Safe Mac Apps” a short time ago. There are 7, but really only 5 are clearly identified alternate sites. Their 6th site is the Mac App Store. The recommendations from MakeUseOf for download sources are:

    1. MacUpdate
    2. Softpedia
    3. Pure Mac
    4. CNET Download
    5. MacApps
    6. Mac App Store
    7. Download Directly From the Developer – (See my new macOS Software Directory for a list of some of the software available for the Mac and the vendor’s website)

While your Mac has built-in protection against malware (See my article BUILT-IN OS X MALWARE PROTECTION), you do run a risk when downloading software from other sources than Apple. If you are not familiar with the source of the software, search on the Internet to see if there are any concerns about the vendor.
