Japan, Tokyo – Akihabara Electric Town

I read about the Akihabar area of Tokyo in one of the tourist brochures. This area of Tokyo can be found near the Akihabara station on the JR rail line. The area established itself as the place to find electrical goods for the home in the years after World War II. Today the area is the shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods.

In addition to the electrical/electronics products that can be found there, the area is considered by many to be an otaku (a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly towards the anime and manga fandom) cultural center.  As you can see in the video clip above, icons for anime and manga are on the buildings throughout the area. Many cosplayers can be found on the streets handing out ads for area shops. Prominent of these are those advertising the ‘maid cafés’.

The area has several ‘maid cafés‘ and ‘cosplay cafés‘. We saw several young Japanese women in front of shops dressed up in the ‘maid’ costumes. I did not realize why they were dressed up like they were until I started researching for this blog post. As one might expect, the area was crowded and most of that crowd was made up of young men.

We just past quickly through the area looking. I could easily have spent hours looking through the shops.

Review of “Voices from the Second World War: Stories of War as Told to Children of Today”

Book ReviewsWWIIWWII Timeline – “Voices from the Second World War: Stories of War as Told to Children of Today” eBook was published in 2018.

I received an ARC of this novel through in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘PG’ because it contains a few scenes of Violence. The book is a collection of very short (mostly 2-3 pages each) stories about World War II experiences shared with today’s children. Views are recorded from the military and civilians, Allied and Axis. The accounts give a very different look at World War II and the lives of those who lived through it.

I thought that this was an interesting 7 hour read of this 320 page non-fiction book. I learned a few things while reading. I had never heard of the Land Girls. I did find that the stories began to get a little repetitive. I think that Young Adults would be interested in these accounts, but would have a difficult time reading the book cover-to-cover. I can see where teachers would want to share selections with their classes when the World War II era was being covered in history. I liked the cover art. I give this novel a 3.8 (rounded up to a 4) out of 5.

Review of “Dark Territory”

Book Reviews – “Dark Territory” eBook was published in 2018 and was written by Leo J. Maloney ( Mr. Maloney has published eight novels.

I received an ARC of this novel through in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novella as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence. The story is set mostly aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway. The primary character is young Alex Morgan.

Morgan may be a very young woman, but she is also a very experienced and competent operative, for a very secret US organization. She is on her way home from a mission when she is inadvertently sucked into a plot to blackmail the US and Russian governments for millions. Will she be able to stop the plot before aircraft target her train?

I thought that this was a pretty good 2.5 hour read for this thriller novella. While it is part of the “Dan Morgan” thriller series, it really focusses on his daughter, Alex. The cover art is OK, but I think something with the train would have been more appropriate. I give this novel a 4 out of 5.

Japan, Tokyo – Cookie Time Cookie Bar Harajuku

We were out exploring Tokyo a few days ago. We came out of the Harajuku subway station and started down the street. We unexpectedly came upon the Cookie Time Cookie Bar. The shop is located at 1-21-15 Jingumae | 1F Napole Harajuku Bldg., Shibuya 150-0011, Tokyo Prefecture. This was quite a different dessert place.

They had several different types of cookies, but we controlled ourselves and only ordered three. They were served warm, and they were all very good.

We thought that the “freakshakes” (see the red sign to upper left) looked intriguing. As we sat discussing which one to try, an American couple sitting next to us overheard us talking about the shakes. They suggested the Nutella shake, which they had ordered. We took their advice and we were not disappointed.

What can I say? This was an awesome shake. And yes, that is a chocolate cookie topping it off.

I chatted with some of the young women working at the shop. CookieTime got its start in 1983 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Two Cookie Bars are now open, one in Queensland and the other in Tokyo. My wife and I both believe one of these shops would do great in the Domain or Domain Northside areas back in Austin.

I told the young ladies working at CookieTime I wrote a blog and asked them for a photo. They (two Americans and an Australian) gathered around their “cookie monster” and posed for the shot above.

If I am in Tokyo again and have the chance, I will be returning to CookieTime! If you are in Tokyo and near the Meiji Shrine or Takeshita Street, take a few minutes and drop by CookieTime. You will not be disappointed!

macOS New App Release – WebSonar 2.3.2

Product Announcement – NeoNet Corp of Salmon Arm, British Columbia has released WebSonar 2.3.2. NeoNet Corp’s WebSonar is a macOS application that provides a search engine with a built-in web server. WebSonar dynamically creates a web presence from files stored in indexed, WebSonar Libraries, including image, audio, video and pdf documents. WebSonar searches at the page level and indexes every page in a document. Documents can include many thousands of pages. Every Library can serve thousands of documents.

WebSonar Library Benefits:
Standard web browser client, all existing resources can be added and shared, paperless, no additional infrastructure, no additional support staff, internet connection not required, library users can opt in or out at anytime, every participant manages their own files, source documents are not edited, designed for iPads. Every document page has a searchable linked note that can be used for collaboration.

Think of it as rolling Google, FaceBook, Pinterest, YouTube and the Cloud into one simple application, minus the spam and privacy concerns. WebSonar libraries have the potential to have a very positive impact on the way we use the internet to acquire knowledge; particularly on education. This community distributed approach may be what the originators of the Internet initially envisioned. In the nineteen-eighties, the Internet was a small, decentralized collective of computers.

This is not the same Internet we know today. Today most communication flows through a small set of corporations; and thus, falls under the influence of those companies and institutions. Internet users now regularly submit to terms-of-service agreements that give companies license to share their personal data with other institutions, from advertisers to governments.

Now you can publish your own content, hosted on your own computer, located at home, in a Data Center, School or Co-op without trading your privacy. Every library owner can add content to their library from any web browser. Each library can contain PDF, image, audio, and video content. Library access can be set to private or public.

“If you think the internet is not working in its current incarnation, you can’t change the system through think-pieces and F.C.C. regulations alone. You need new code,” explained Duane Bemister, principal at Salmon Arm-based NeoNet Corp.”

Your content can be searched at the page level or by Title. Each page has a searchable note that can be set to read-only or editable. The robot search engines cannot index the content of your libraries. WebSonar is scalable and can be used in a closed private network. Adding new content to your library is simple; just drag any file that you want to include into your library folder and then “Index” with WebSonar. That’s it. Your library is now just a click away in any web browser.

System Requirements:

  • macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or later
  • 64-bit processor
  • 164 MB

School Libraries Network, is a free distributed framework that anyone can use to share education resources right down to the personal library level with WebSonar. WebSonar can be used to dynamically publish library databases, course materials (audio, video, images & PDF), and Apple’s iBooks.WebSonar is available for purchase from the website. A copy of WebSonar 9 can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store.

Review of “Hullmetal Girls”

Book Reviews – “Hullmetal Girls” eBook was published in 2018 (July) and was written by Emily Skrutskie ( Ms. Skrutskie has published three books.

I received an ARC of this novel through in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and Mature Language. The story is set in the far future. All that is left of the Human race is aboard a fleet of ships that have been looking for a new home for centuries. The primary characters are young Aisha Un-Haad and Key Tanaka.

Un-Haad is willing to do anything to save her family. Tanaka doesn’t remember how or why she is a Scela. Un-Haad, on the other hand, volunteered to become a Scela. The Scela are the fleet’s enhanced and mechanized soldiers, no longer merely human. Un-Haad sacrificed herself to try and save her little sister and brother. Being new Scela means that they must work hard to get a good assignment. That is the only way that Un-Haad will be able to help her family survive in the rigidly structured fleet society.

She and Tanaka soon find that there is much that has been hidden from them. Much that is hidden from the general population. Their loyalties to the Fleet government begin to waver. Will those in charge ever let a new homeworld be found?

I thought that this was an interesting read of 8.5 hours for this 320 page science fiction novel. All of the primary characters are young women in this story. I would say that it would be something appropriate for Young Adults. The author put together an unusual universe for the story to play out in. I liked the cover art. I give this novel a 3.8 (rounded up to a 4) out of 5.

macOS New App Release – Merlin Project Pro

kanban_enProduct AnnouncementsProjectWizards of Melle, Germany has released Merlin Project Pro, the successor to its professional project management software for macOS. With the Kanban board, Merlin Project Pro fills the gap to agile project management and supports the Kanban in a clever way. This combines the traditional management of large projects with the ease of the agile approach. Merlin Project Pro makes hybrid project management a reality on the Mac.

An overview of the new functions:

  • Kanban board
  • Resource pool
  • Groupings
  • New style editor
  • Revised user interface

Thanks to the resource pool, you can monitor the utilization of your resources for all projects. Organize the entire team in one or more central resource pools and enter the working hours, holidays, absences and much more. Groupings give users a deep insight into the project structure. Analyze your project: Which processes are the biggest time-consuming? And which of them are on the critical path?

The well-known style editor has been greatly simplified in Merlin Project Pro. In addition, individual formatting of individual processes is now also possible. Of course, the user continues to create rule-based styles. With the new style editor, all this is easier than ever. But not only under the hood was much changed, also the appearance of Merlin Project Pro has been given a facelift. All surfaces shine in a modern, fresh design.

More details on the fifth generation and the free download of the beta version can be found at ProjectWizards online. The software is initially released as a beta version for final testing. As soon as the manufacturer agrees with the quality, the final version follows.
