Drink Coffee, Prolong Your Life

coffee

Coffee – While I just like the taste of coffee in the morning, I came across the article “Study Says 4 Coffees Daily Lowers Your Chance Of Death, So Starbucks Here We Come” that gave me added incentive to have my morning cup (or two or three or . . . ).

The European Society of Cardiology Congress recently published a report that relates increased coffee consumption to a lower risk of death. The study was conducted at Hospital de Navarra and included 20,000 participants over a 10 year period. The results:

Those who drank at least four cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower rate of death than the participants who either never drank coffee or rarely did. Meanwhile, those who were 45 years old and up and drank two additional cups of coffee a day had a 30% lower rate of death.

So sit back and sip a few cups of coffee each morning and enjoy this world of ours a little longer.

Short Science Fiction Film “Human”

Short Films – The short (25:01) science fiction film “Human” has won several awards and was published to YouTube in April of 2017. The synopsis:

The official multi award winning sci-fi independent short film ‘Human’. Directed by multi award winning film maker Patrick Ryder, Human tells the story of Anna, a woman lost and alone who stumbles upon what appears to be an abandoned warehouse, but what she discovers inside will change her life forever with the discovery of Allium the robot ‘Played by Alex Phillips and voiced by Mitch Rouse’. An intelligent machine capable of learning and possibly even feeling. The pair spark up an unlikely friendship and when Anna learns of ‘Mari’ ‘Nadia Lamin’ a woman who may hold the key to all the secrets, Anna knows what she must do.

This is a very well done film. Not the action packed video you normally see with these films, but very enjoyable.

Podcast – Security Now

Security_Now_cover_art

Podcasts – I have been listening to the Security Now podcast since it began. It has been published weekly now for over 10 years. The latests episode as of this writing is #626. While they began as short programs of under 30 minutes, they have rapidly grown to around two hours per episode.

The show is presented on the TWiT Network and features Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson. While, as the name implies, the focus is on computer security, they also will talk about Tech in general and Science Fiction from time to time. The more recent episodes cover the security news that has occurred over the past week (almost always something new). They sometimes address questions from their large international audience, with occasional deep-dives into an issue of computer technology or security.

The program is well done and I recommend it to anyone interested in computer security, or who simply uses a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Star Wars Fan Film “Star Wars Downunder”

Short FilmStar Wars – “Star Wars Downunder” is an unusual Star Wars Fan film as it has a definite tongue-in-cheek Australian twist – boomerang light sabers, hopping Imperial Walkers and a quest for beer. It is a full 30:57 film that was uploaded to YouTube in November 2013. The synopsis:

Star Wars Downunder is a 30 minute Star Wars fan film which finally answers the age-old question that has confounded many a film buff before: What would happen if you crossed Star Wars with an Australian beer commercial. Answer? Star Wars Downunder: an epic tale of the good, the bad and the thirsty. Directed by Michael Cox and written by Bryan Meakin and Michael Cox, Star Wars Downunder is half an hour of action, special effects and lovable Aussie larakins.

While kind of goofy and a little hard to understand because of the thick Australian accent, this is a pretty good film. It has amazingly good special effects.

Review of “The Woman Who Knew Too Much”

51X5mAGjCML

Book Reviews – “The Woman Who Knew Too Much” eBook was published in 2017 and was written by Tom Savage (http://tomsavagebooks.com). Mr. Savage has published nine novels, two under the pseudonym of T. J. Phillips. This is the second of his “Nora Baron” thrillers.

I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence. The story begins in the US, but most of it takes place in Venice, Italy. The primary character is actress and now college professor Nora Baron.

Baron’s husband is a CIA agent. Her husband’s boss approaches her with a special request. He wants her assistance to help a Russian actress defect from the touring troop she is with when it appears in Venice. The job is supposed to be easy and relatively harmless, but it proves to be much more complicated. Baron begins to have serious questions about the woman who has asked for help in defecting.

I enjoyed the 8+ hours I spent reading this 251 page Mystery Thriller. I found this book particularly interesting since my wife and I were in Venice in November of 2016. I liked the character of Nora Baron. While this is the second novel in the series, it does read well as a stand-alone novel. There is some action, but most of the story is about finding out what is behind the proposed defection and the intrigue between the major characters. The cover art is OK, with a hint of Venice. I give this novel a 4.5 (rounded up to a 5) out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31181778-john-purvis).

macOS New App Release – JustBroadcaster for Periscope 1.1.1

P-1

Product Announcements – Mac Broadcaster of Moscow, Russia has released JustBroadcaster for Periscope 1.1.1, their powerful, yet easy to use, Periscope live-streaming app for macOS. The app allows anyone to easily stream live video content directly to Periscope from their Mac in just a few easy steps. Users can share video from various sources, including apps, the Mac Desktop, webcams, iOS devices, and more.

JustBroadcaster is not intended for use by video professionals, but instead for use as a simple, yet powerful way for business users to share live video content with their followers on the Periscope live video streaming platform. The app allows anyone to quickly broadcast live video to Periscope in just a few minutes.

Periscope integration means there’s no need to worry about complicated set ups. The app uses the Periscope API to create and manage the stream. Users need only a Persicope account to get started.

“Users have loved our previous JustBroadcaster apps, which allow easy broadcasting of live content to YouTube and Facebook. Now we’re bringing that same easy-to-use live streaming ability to Periscope users,” says JustBroadcaster for Periscope developer Michael Garanin. “Just insert the video sources into the prepared templates and start your stream. It’s easy to add a logo and background to your video for a great professional effect.”

Features:

  • Easy Start – Insert the video source into ready-to-use templates
  • Insert a logo and background for a professional look
  • Use multiple sources during the broadcast
  • Easily capture the Mac’s screen and applications
  • Broadcast from any iOS device
  • Make an HD-quality local recording of the video stream
  • Special color effects
  • BlackMagic ready
  • Predefined graphics sets
  • Chroma Key (green screen) effects
  • “Lower Thirds” information capabilities
  • Scrolling text
  • Control remotely from any iOS or Android device

Users can select their audio source, video source, and other options with just a few mouse clicks. Audio can be selected from the Mac’s built-in Mic or any connected sound source, including USB microphones. Video sources can include the Mac’s desktop, a specific app, a webcam, or a graphic file.

The app also captures the Mac Desktop and any applications used on the Mac during a broadcast. The easy to use tool allows users to capture all of the desktop or just a certain portion, in order to highlight an application window. iOS screen capture is also available, making it easy to stream any app from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

While extremely easy to use, JustBroadcaster for Periscope offers several powerful features that will make your Periscope broadcast look professional. Screen templates allow for the bottom third of your screen to display stationary and scrolling information, much like that seen on local and network news broadcasts. JustBroadcaster also supports multiple video sources, with the ability to transition between each source.

JustBroadcaster for Periscope is perfect for:

  • Marketers who need to live-stream a presentation of a new product and get instant feedback
  • Startups who need to broadcast a stream of a new app or product to potential investors
  • Financial Consultants to offer live morning market analysis with charts and more
  • Shops can show special deals and offers from their showrooms directly to Periscope followers

The Mac Broadcaster team is continually working on new ways to use JustBroadcaster technology to share video to all of the popular social networking sites. The developers plan to add the ability to include viewer statistics and Periscope chat capabilities to the app in a future release.

The team’s previous releases include JustBroadcaster for Facebook and JustBroadcaster for YouTube. Users can also take advantage of Mac Broadcaster’s free online support forum, where questions about their apps can be posted, and are quickly answered.

System Requirements:

Review “Operation Firedog”

61ZVa5VnpmL._SY346_

Book Reviews – “Operation Firedog” eBook was published in 2017 (original paper edition was published in 1982) and was written by Robert Jackson. Mr. Jackson has published more than 50 books, mostly non-fiction about the military. This is the 8th novel in his fictional “Yeoman” series.

I received an ARC of this novel through https://www.netgalley.com in return for a fair and honest review. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and Mature Situations. The story is set in and around Singapore during the late 1940s. The primary character is Wing Commander George Yeoman.

Yeoman is assigned to a new base in Malaya. Yeoman, his air crews and British troops are there to fight the communists that are threatening to displace the government and take over. They find themselves in a situation every bit as dangerous as the recent war.

I enjoyed the 4 hours I spent reading this 177 page Military Fiction novel. I have read most of the other Yeoman novels, but this one does well as a stand-alone read. Even though it was written more than 35 years ago, it is still a good read. The cover art depicts the jungle warriors that are a prominent part of the story. I give this novel a 4 out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31181778-john-purvis).

Short Science Fiction Film “The Highwaymen – Episode 1”

Short film – The Highwaymen series is produced by ThePsychoJellyfish and this first short (10:17) episode was posted to YouTube in September 2013. The synopsis:

Years after the Scourge virus brought humanity close to extinction, three travelers make their way through the forested wastes that were once civilization. However, an unexpected confrontation makes them realize the area isn’t as empty as they thought.

It isn’t too bad a production overall, though the three travelers seem to be traveling pretty light. The acting seems a little week to me, but as independent production it isn’t bad.
