Product Announcement – Ergonis Software of Perg, Austria has released PopChar X 8.0, a major new version of the company’s award-winning tool for finding and inserting special characters and exploring fonts. 30 years ago, the first version of PopChar, running on System 6 on a Mac Plus, came into the world and was soon highly acclaimed as the best character finder on macOS. Today, Ergonis Software released the major new version 8.0 of PopChar X with more than 40 new features and improvements, which further enhance functionality, usability and convenience, resulting in the best PopChar ever.

One of the major great new features of PopChar 8 is doubtlessly the possibility to create custom layouts, which let you arrange and group characters according to your liking. The new version comes with a number of built-in layouts, you can create your own layouts, and Ergonis also offers additional layouts for download from its site.

It is now possible to link fonts to preferred layouts that work best for these fonts. For example, you can link the Apple Color Emoji font with the new built-in Emoji layout, which neatly arranges and groups more than 1500 emojis defined in the Emoji 5.0 standard. Finding, exploring, and inserting emoji characters never was so easy.

And of course, PopChar does not stop at simple/single emoji characters. Its table includes symbols that would otherwise be difficult to create, as they actually consist of multiple characters (for example, a “base character” modified by a symbol for a profession, a male/female symbol, and optionally a skin tone). With PopChar, you just click and select. Not enough, PopChar also supports Emoji Presentation Sequences for selecting the text or emoji form of characters that can have both presentations.

PopChar 8 also adds support for ligatures – a secret feature of many fonts that translates adjacent characters into aesthetically pleasing forms. PopChar finds all ligatures that are available in a font and shows them in a separate section at the bottom of the character table. Selecting a ligature inserts the character sequence that is translated into a special glyph in the current font.

PopChar 8 no longer shows the recently used characters in a separate layout but rather displays them in a dedicated group at the top of the character table. No more switching back and forth between layouts; the recently used and the favorite characters are both always there at a convenient location in every layout.

PopChar 8 finally offers a long list of further new features and enhancements and improves compatibility with many third-party applications. Visit Ergonis Software’s website to learn more about the changes in this release and to download the new version.

PopChar solves a problem faced by every technologist and multi-lingual worker. Inserting special characters into application documents can be frustrating and results in a steady loss of productivity. With PopChar, thousands of special characters are only a few clicks away. Just pop up the PopChar window, click the desired character, and the character appears in your current document right away.
