Trailer for “Atomic Blonde”

Trailers – Interesting British spy thriller set during the cold war, full of action with Charlize Theron playing the lead role. The story line is “An undercover MI6 agent is sent to Berlin during the Cold War to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and recover a missing list of double agents.”

The movie certainly seems to have a lot of action scenes. It might be something to watch for when it premiers July 28.

Trailer for “Dunkirk”

TrailersWWII – Between May 26 and June 4, 1940, during the early days of World War II, the British Expeditionary Force was surrounded in France. They had come to the mainland to stope Hitler, instead, they and their French and Belgian allies were overrun. They retreated towards the port of Dunkirk near the border with Belgium.

Germany had sought to surround them and force them to surrender. They fought on and over the eight days of the Dunkirk evacuation more than 338,000 men were able to make their escape to the UK. The rescue flotilla was made up of over 800 boats – both military and civilian – that risked the wrath of the German Army and Luftwaffe to bring the men home.

This movie. which opens July 21. tells the story of the evacuation. From what little this trailer shows, this looks like it might be a pretty good movie about World War II.

Sounds From “Blade Runner”

If you like Science Fiction in general, or “Blade Runner” in particular, you might like this. Or maybe you just need some noise in the background as you work or sleep.

The link above gives a 12 hour . . . YES a 12 hour loop of sounds from Blade Runner. This is just one of the sound loops YouTube user Crysknife007 has created. If you visit his YouTube channel you will find several other lengthy sound recordings. I liked the 24 hour Star Trek TNG Ambient engine noise. But there is a Battlestar Galactica Ambient Engine sound recording too if that is more to your taste.

macOS, iOS New App Release – VPN Unlimited

Product announcement – KeepSolid of New York, New York has released VPN Unlimited, featuring a DNS Firewall. This new version blocks malware, ads and tracking web resources. In addition to a top-notch VPN service, now VPN Unlimited has all users might need to browse the web securely, privately and protected.

DNS Firewall is a unique solution that combines three tools – anti-tracking, ad-blocking and anti-malware – in one. By just changing an IP address, you are not totally protected from tracking systems. In the new update, VPN Unlimited solves this issue, stops them from spying on your browsing activities. An ad-blocking function bans nearly all ads both on websites and in apps, which is pretty unique even for ad-blocking apps. It works smoothly on iOS and Android, as well as on desktops. VPN Unlimited will also filter traffic to prevent malware from infecting your devices.

In case users want to block some site that is not listed as a spammy one, they can manually add it to the Black List in the app. As well as add some web resources to the White List so they never get banned. White lists have a higher priority than Black lists.

Thanks to the DNS Firewall, users will have a long sought-after ad-free and safe web browsing experience. In the near future, KeepSolid will add a possibility to set up DNS Firewall on routers and Windows Phones too.

About the service:
VPN Unlimited creates an encrypted tunnel, and all user activity travels through it. This means that all the data they send or receive is hidden from hackers, sniffers, and spies because it is inside that tunnel. A tunnel is established between your device and one of 1200+ reliable servers of VPN Unlimited, located in 70 regions around the globe.

Not only your connection will be protected, your geographic location and IP will be hidden too. This will let you surf the web without any restrictions or limits. Whether inside your country, or on a business trip, or on vacation, you will have access to your favorite web resources even in the regions with strict internet censorship.

VPN Unlimited is a cross-platform service, available for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Windows Phone, Linux, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. VPN Unlimited for macOS is free and can be downloaded from the website or from the Mac App Store. The free iOS version can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store.

Finding the ISS

Space Travel Space International Space Station Iss

If you are interested in space, you may have tried to get away from the city lights and look up at the night sky. One of the bright objects in orbit is the International Space Station (ISS).

The ISS is in a fast orbit of the Earth, traveling at over 17,000 mile per hour. This means that the ISS completes an orbit about every 90 minutes. If you are in a spot that is relatively free of light pollution, seeing the ISS is easy.

To plan ahead for such an excursion you can use the “Spot the Station” site from NASA. You can enter where you will be into the site and it will then give you a list of the dates and times the ISS will be visible from that location. The site also gives you directions as to where to look for the ISS in the evening sky.

You can even sign up for alerts for when the ISS will be passing within view of your location. Taking advantage of this would be a great way to involve kids in STEM activities. For me the current closest location with a list of sighting opportunities is for Georgetown, TX, just a few miles north of where I live. The next viewing opportunities will be at:

Date Visible Max Height Appears Disappears
Tue May 2, 5:42 AM 4 min 26° 11° above S 21° above E
Wed May 3, 4:52 AM 2 min 12° 11° above SE 10° above ESE
Thu May 4, 5:35 AM 3 min 88° 30° above SW 28° above NE

The concept will be that the world is being transformed by the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. While we are not there yet, our society is in the process of being massively changed by the growing introduction of robots, AI and Automation. The series will show the struggle between the emergent AI and humanity.

This might be a good series if it makes it through to production.

What is Your Learning style?

I came across the article “There Are 7 Types of Learners: Which One Are You?” recently. Those of us in technology and engineering face life long Continuing Education (CE) to keep current with the state of the art. However as we consider the various means of satisfying our CE needs, we need to understand that there are different styles of learning, and what works well for one person, may not for you.

The styles that have been identified are (from learning-styles-online.com: The Seven Learning Styles):

  1. Visual (spatial): You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
  2. Aural (auditory, musical): You prefer using sound and music.
  3. Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
  4. Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands.
  5. Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning, and systems.
  6. Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
  7. Solitary (Intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study.

We each probably have an idea of which styles are best for us, but we can find out for sure by taking an easy on-line test at Memletics Learning Styles Questionnaire. The results can then guide you to the most effective types of CE content for your learning style.
