Review of “Into the Guns”

Book Review – “Into the Guns” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by William C. Dietz ( Mr. Dietz had published over 50 novels. This is the first novel in his “America Rising” series.

I received a galley of this novel for review through I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence, Mature Language and Mature Situations. The story is set in the contemporary US. A undetected cluster of meteors slam into the Earth causing wide spread destruction. Among the locations hardest hit is Washington DC, taking out all of the US leadership.

Lawlessness and anarchy ensues. Wealthy leaders in the South take it upon themselves to form a second confederacy. Among the survivors are Lieutenant Robin “Mac” Macintyre, with the US Army. She is in command a a platoon of Stryker armored reconnaissance vehicles. Her unit is sent on a mission, but her commander is killed. Soon she and her unit find themselves abandoned and must survive on their own. As the unit slowly attracts new recruits, it becomes more of Mercenary unit as they simply try to survive.

Secretary of Energy Samuel Sloan is in Mexico when the meteors hit. He struggles to make his way back to the US. He is captured by Southern forces, but is able to escape. He is surprised to find that he is now the President as all ahead of him in the line of succession were killed. He sees the need to both rebuild American and reunite the states. US military units are assembled and many mercenary units, including Macintyre’s, are hired.

Complications include Macintyre’s father and sister both being part of the Southern military leadership. her unit is in constant danger from bandits, gangs, other mercenary forces, Souther military and spies.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 7.5 hours I spent reading this 333 page Post Apocalypse Military Thriller. I liked both primary characters that Dietz created. the story was fast paced and kept me thoroughly engaged. The cover art was well chosen for the book. This books only tells the first chapter of the story. I look forward to future novels in the series. I give this novel a 5 out of 5.
