Preparing for iOS 10

iOS 10 was released last week. I have upgraded both my iPhone 6 (last Friday) and iPad Air2 (Yesterday) without any problems. While the user experience is a little different (I like what I have seen so far) I have had no surprises.

Are you thinking about upgrading? Follow these recommendations

Check your device compatibility [1, 2, 3, 5, 6]

  • iPhones – 5, 5s, 5c, SE, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7 and 7 Plus
  • iPads – 9.7″ Pro, 12.9″ Pro, Air 2, Air, 4, Mini 4, Mini 3 and Mini 2
  • iPod Touch – 6

Free Space on your device [1, 5, 8]

  • Remove any unused Apps
  • Remove any media
  • You need at least 2GB of free space

Backup the Device

  • If you use iTunes to back up to your computer, update to latest iTunes first
  • Make sure you can recover all passwords from the backup by encrypting the backup [8]

Install the Update

  • You will need to know your Apple ID & password
  • Find a location with a strong Wi-Fi signal, preferable not at a free Wi-Fi location being shared by many users
  • I prefer to do it locally on the device rather than to use iTunes [7]
  • My iPhone took about 90 minutes to update last Friday, while my iPad seemed to go faster yesterday
  • I have heard that some take longer, be patient
  • Update all of your Apps
