“Diadem from the Stars” eBook was published 2016 (original paper edition published in 1977) and was written by Jo Clayton (http://joclayton.deepgenre.com). Ms. Clayton published 35 novels and many short stories.

I received a galley of this novel for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I categorize this novel as ‘R’ because it contains scenes of Violence and Mature Situations. The story is set in a primitive world, though in a universe with space travel. The primary character is Aleytys, a young woman born to a off world woman and a local clan leader.

Because she favors her mother’s unusual look – red hair and green eyes – she is only reluctantly tolerated by her clan. She eventually finds that she must flee her home. Using information in her mother’s journal, Aleytys journeys across the world of Jaydugar hoping to find her way off planet and back to the mother she never knew.

Aleytys encounters one harrowing situation after another and begins to develop some control of her natural mental abilities. Then she meets with the witches and is presented with the Diadem that takes her to an entirely new level of ability.

This was an interesting 8.5 hour read of 244 pages. With all of the encounters that Aleytys had, the novel was fast paced. I liked the story, but it was not great. I think this is meant as a Science Fiction novel, but it reads more like a Fantasy. I do like the newer cover with the diadem shown over the older cover. I give this novel a 3.7 (rounded up to a 4) out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31181778-john-purvis).
