“Shattered Spear” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by Jack Campbell (pseudonym for John G. Hemry http://www.jack-campbell.com). Mr. Campbell has published 25 novels. This is the 4th novel in his “Lost Stars” series.

I received a galley of this novel for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I categorize this novel as ‘PG’ because it contains scenes of Violence. This novel is set in the far future in the world Campbell created for his “Lost Fleet” series. The primary characters are Midway President Gwen Iceni and General Artur Drakon. Both formerly with the Syndicate, together they now lead the free government of the Midway star system.

Midway is a former Syndicate world which has broken away and is trying to be a more enlightened government. The Syndicate still wants Midway back. Complicating matters is the hidden presence of Enigma (an alien race that wants to eradicate all human presence from their domain of space) forces in a nearby star system. Not only do Iceni and Drakon face these foes, they are each being stalked by assassins.

To save their struggling world, they must defeat Syndicate fleets as well as the Enigma forces. A woman who has a history with Iceni further disrupts their efforts when she arrives with a fleet of her own and declares her intent to seek vengeance on Iceni.

I enjoyed nearly 10 hours of reading this 350 page novel. I have read all of the books in the “Lost Fleet” series and one in the “Beyond The Frontier” follow-on series, but none of the earlier three in this series. The earlier books are tied in with this one, so at least I had some background. This is not a great stand-alone read, but it is not terrible either. My best advice though is to start with The Lost Fleet: Dauntless and read your way through this great Science Fiction series. I have to say that Hemry (aka Campbell) is one of my favorite authors. I give this novel a 5 out of 5.
