Review of “Miasma”

“Miasma” eBook was published in 2016 and was written by Greg Cox (http://www.gregcox-author.com). Mr. Cox has published more than 30 novels.

I received a galley of this novella for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I categorize this novella as ‘PG’ because it contains some scenes of Violence. This novella is set in the universe of the original Star Trek series, but after the time of the TV series and the movies.

The Enterprise is taking diplomats to a conference when they detect a signal from an unexplored world. Fearing it is a distress signal, Kirk diverts the Enterprise to investigate. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Chekov, along with a few other crew members leave the Enterprise, to find the source of the signal.

Due to the unique atmosphere of the planet, the shuttle crashes. The atmosphere interrupts radio signals so that the crew are cut off. Spock is severely injured in the crash, and is further put into distress when they discover that only the scent of his odd blood is keeping the predators at bay. The native environment of the planet is full of threats and before long the stranded crew are surrounded by death. Will Kirk and the Enterprise be able to save the surviving crew?

The two hours I spent reading this 90 page novella took me back to the original series. It was quick enjoyable read. I give this novel a 4 out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/31181778-john-purvis).
