Book Review of “Linesman”

Unknown

“Linesman” eBook was published in 2015 (June) and was written by S. K. Dunstall (Sherylyn and Karen Dunstall) (http://www.skdunstall.com). This is their first book of a planned trilogy.

I obtained a galley of this novel for review through https://www.netgalley.com. I would categorize this novel as ‘PG’ as there are instances of Violence. This Science Fiction novel is set in a far future where humanity has spread to many worlds. The primary character is Ean Lambert. Lambert is a ‘Linesman’ – one who can work with the lines of energy. These lines are the basis for communication and, most importantly, faster than light travel.

Lambert is a little unusual in that he grew up in the slums and came late to Linesman training. While a certified ’10’, the top grade of Linesman, he is considered an outsider and a bit of a quack.

A mysterious alien ship is discovered and Lambert is one of the two Linesman to be hired to evaluate it. He makes many discoveries and is caught up in a power play between opposing forces and his own Linesman guild.

The 11.5 hours I spent with the book were enjoyable, but there were times that it seem a little rough around the edges. Lambert was caught up in more than one ship based fight. There was also quite a bit of political intrigue between the parties. I will look for the next installment in the trilogy. I give this novel a 3.9 (rounded u to 4) out of 5.

My book reviews are also published on Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com).
